Imagine.
Thousands of young people gathered in a desert field for a two-day music festival.
Sons and daughters. Brothers and sisters. Mothers and fathers. Lovers. Friends.
They were peaceniks….flower children - celebrating their youth and their freedom without a care in the world.
Nova Festival - 7 October 2023
More Jews were murdered in a single day since the Holocaust.
I am - Canadian by birth. American by marriage. Jewish by my heritage, legacy and DNA.
This work has been my way of woking through and sitting with the horror…the sadness…the grief…the disbelief that this has happened. AGAIN.I’ve cut, folded and sewn 364 paper dresses - one for each life lost.
I begin with a photograph of a flower from my mother’s garden. Each color has been chosen with intention:
White daisies - innocence
Yellow buttercups- joy
Blue forget me nots- remembrance
Red poppies - love
Greens - renewal and regrowth
The dresses are sewn together with yellow thread - the color of the ribbons and cries to ‘BRING THE HOSTAGES HOME’. The chains are those of bondage.
A simple pine box in which we’re buried.
Are we rising? Or are we falling?
I let you - the viewer - decide.
